Cambodia hasn’t announced yet any intention to roll out an official digital nomad visa. Most digital nomads, excluding those of Khmer descent, currently enter the country using a tourist visa officially called Type-T visa. It permits a 30-day stay for foreign passport holders, renewable for another month. So, let’s talk about this visa type while we await Cambodia’s digital nomad visa.

There are two ways to obtain a tourist visa: through a Cambodian Embassy or consulate in your home country or by applying for an e-visa online before traveling.

Type-T Visa for Digital Nomads Visiting Cambodia

Without a dedicated digital nomad visa like Malaysia’s DE Rantau Nomad Pass, your option in Cambodia is to go for a tourist visa. the Type-T visa. It is a single-entry visa that remains valid for three months from the date of issue, granting a 30-day stay upon entry. This visa is specifically intended for foreign passport holders who fall under the category of general travelers. Furthermore, it is possible to extend the visa for an additional 30 days by visiting the Cambodia Immigration Office.

Requirements

  1. Original passport: A valid passport with a minimum of six (6) months validity from the date of entry into Cambodia is required. It should have at least two (2) blank visa pages for the visa sticker and entry stamps.
  2. Passport validity: The passport must be valid for at least six (6) months before the date of entry into Cambodia.
  3. Visa application form: Complete the visa application form and attach one (1) recent 2×2 passport photo. The photo should have been taken within the last six (6) months.
  4. Copy of Passport bio-page: Provide a copy of the passport’s bio-page, which contains the passport name and photo information. Black and white copies are acceptable.
  5. Visa sticker: The visa is a sticker visa and needs to be affixed to the passport visa page. It must be signed and stamped, not an electronic visa.
  6. Screening and verification: The applicant’s eligibility for the visa is subject to screening and verification.
  7. Fee: A fee of $30 USD is applicable.

The good thing about a tourist visa is you’re not required to show proof of incomein Indonesia, it’s $135,000!—but be prepared to show enough money to prove you can tour the country.

Steps to Apply

Via e-Visa website (most convenient)

Similar to Vietnam’s e-visa process, Cambodia’s e-visa is pretty much straightforward.

  1. Apply online: Fill out the application form on the official e-Visa website at https://www.evisa.gov.kh/application.
  2. Submit supporting documents: Upload the required documents, such as hotel reservations and any other supporting materials.
  3. Choose an entry point: Phnom Penh International Airport, Siem Reap International Airport, Cham Yeam (Koh Kong), Poi Pet, Bavet, Sihanoukville International Airport or Tropaeng Kreat Border Post.
  4. Make payment: Pay the visa fee using Visa, Mastercard, Unionpay, Alipay, or WeChat.
  5. Wait for the approval in 3 days. You can download the e-visa certificate from the email you provided during the application process. You can check your application’s status here or edit it online: https://www.evisa.gov.kh/check_change.
  6. Show the e-visa certificate at your point of entry.

Via an embassy or consulate

  1. Fill out the visa application form, which can be found at: https://www.embassyofcambodiadc.org/uploads/9/8/1/8/98182996/cambodiatouristvisaform.pdf.
  2. Drop off your completed visa application at the embassy or consulate. Walk-in applicants are welcome.
  3. You can submit multiple visa applications, but ensure that you have fulfilled all the necessary requirements.
  4. Please note that all walk-in applicants are subject to screening and verification, and visa approval is not guaranteed.
  5. To prevent any delays, kindly ensure that you have completed all the visa requirements.
  6. The processing time for visa applications is approximately 5-7 working days from the date of submission.

You May Be Denied Visa If…

An e-Visa for Cambodia does not guarantee entry into the country. Immigration officers retain the discretion to deny entry based on various factors. These may include insufficient funds to cover your expenses during your stay in Cambodia, a history of prosecution in Cambodia or other jurisdictions, involvement in drug use or trafficking, engaging in prostitution, or displaying poor character.

Another important point to note is that the fee paid for the e-Visa is non-refundable. Once the payment is made, it cannot be reimbursed, even if your visa application is rejected or you decide to cancel your travel plans.
